EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION ("Morning-after pill")

Emergency Contraception is a way to reduce your risk of pregnancy after having unprotected sex (sex without birth control or when birth control fails). It is not intended for regular use, but should be used in situations where:

  • you had sex without birth control (heat of the moment) and do not want to become pregnant
  • the condom broke
  • you missed one day of your birth contrl pills or were late starting your pack
  • your diaphragm slipped
  • your missed your birth control shot
  • your were forced to have sex

The key factor is time! Emergency contraception is most effective when taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex.

Emergency contraception is available at the Health Service during normal hours and is free on site. It is provided on a walk-in basis.

If the Health Service is closed and you don't feel you can wait or waiting will put you beyond the 72 hour window,
